Name that Federation!

Ninety readers responded to Labor Notes’ ‘Name That Federation!’ contest, based on the notion that the AFL-CIO, Change to Win, and the NEA may unite. Entries ranged from the prosaic (Working America) to the aspirational (Labor Party). Some entries were sarcastic:

Old White Guys United [for Awhile])
Change the Subject Coalition
AFL-WTF?

Others were sincere:

Winning As One (WAO)
Union Now
AFL-United
Unite to Win
Solidarity
Workers in NorthAmerica (WIN)

Brits and Australians weren’t shy about chiming in, and insisted on keeping the ‘u’ in ‘labour.’

About 10 percent questioned whether a new name was needed at all—they opted for ‘AFL-CIO,’ often with a scolding directed at Change to Win for leaving.

And the winners are:

Sarcastic: ‘Change to Win, Place, or Show,’ submitted by Joe Hill. Unfortunately, Brother Hill won’t be able to claim his prize, though he’s as live as you or me.

Sincere: ‘Workers Unite.’ Entry #2, submitted by labor historian Nelson Lichtenstein of Santa Barbara, California, who wrote, “Gives a message every time it is said or written.” We like to imagine company reps, government officials, and media types—every time they want to refer to institutional labor—being forced to verbalize “Workers Unite.”
